Miss Universe...Giraffes and Cows are beautiful too

Miss Universe 2009 has been crowned and it is Stefania Fernandez, Miss Venezuela, who takes the crown from last year's winner Dayana Mendoza, who's also Miss Venezuela. This is the first time in the history that a country has won twice in a row.

So I cannot imagine what it must feel like. World Peace! World Harmony but are you ready? I will reveal something quite embarrassing and it's ma tiny brush in the pageant scene which is brief I must admit. I guess I have to tell it like it is!

Aye, factoid, about my blond moment, I joined the Miss Singapore about 6 years ago.
I pulled out before the contest was televised during the semi finals when it suddenly dawned onto me what the bloody hell am I doing here.

This was the moment. We were in our swim suits for the cattle call and I felt so outta place. I believe in trying something that scares me once in my life but I felt so totally lost in the herd. This scares me not in a let's take it up way but let's get the hell out of the way.

That's when I blinked and ran for ma dear life for the the nearest exit door. I will leave the competing to the ladies with real gumption to battle their beauties.
Secretly, I do applaud women who have the intestinal fortitude to get up on stage and do their rounds and work their stuff. It takes guts man. But it is not to be on my CV and a woven part of my skill set, parading round the runway stage displaying my goodies,(I got it from my mama!)

It's refreshing to know that while the world is currently obsessed with long and lean gazette looking beauties, with mascara laden eyes and fake titties, the world's definition of beauty is completely different in some other part of the world.

In Mauritania, young girls in Mauritania's white Moor Arab population are sometimes force-fed to achieve a weight that is dangerous to their healths. Although only around 11 percent of the girls subscribe to this treatment of being forced
fed like a cow, it's still being seen as a sign of wealth and being beautiful. This is seriously a pendulum swing from our current beauty standards but the trend is thankfully slowly changing.

Woman in the hill tribe area of Thailand in the Karen villages wear multiple brass rings around the neck and this is a symbol of ultimate beauty for them . The more the merrier seems to be the mantra. For this tribe the rings are the most prominent sign of female beauty and status. The neck grows longer as additional rings are added with each passing year. These ladies are called the "Long Necks".

Of Giraffes and Cows, we are all beautiful...Innit? Physical beauty is like a butterfly which gingerly descends upon you. But inner beauty lasts through time and space, built through every experience crafted, every tear shed and every challenged conquered and every wrinkle celebrated. Of course, people are going to gawk at beauties plastered all over Miss Universe website but the beauty of someone like Mother Theresa touches us even deeper in the recess of our hearts and souls.
